Course Goals

course is a sequential course designed to teach intermediate and advanced conditioning skills. The goal is to provide the knowledge and skills to live a healthy life.

Core Course Topics

  1. Introduction to equipment, safety, and training guidelines.

  2. Proper mechanics for exericse, injury prevention, and benefits.

  3. Components of fitness including flexibility, strength, cardiovascular and muscular endurance; body composition; and how to achieve higher fitness levels.

  4. Assessment of fitness components and evaluation.

  5. Other forms of resistive training equipment, including exercise balls, tubing, body weight and core exercises.

  6. Exercises to develop the upper and lower body, abdominal muscles, and exercises to develop speed and power.

  7. Nutrition, diet, and exercise as it relates to weight control.

  8. Risk factors that cause disease and preventative behavior.

  9. Disease prevention including cardiovascular training to prevent cardiovascular disease, strength training to prevent osteoporosis, weight control to prevent diabetes (Type 2), and other related problems.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Demonstrate strength training principles and proper techniques (fitness).

Discuss the components of fitness including flexibility, strength, cardiovascular and muscular endurance.

Demonstrate knowledge of how to achieve higher levels of fitness (fitness).

Explain physiological information regarding strength training (fitness).

Discuss risk factors that cause disease and behaviors that lead to disease prevention.

Discuss a healthy diet, exercise and nutrition as it relates to weight control (diet).

Assess and evaluate fitness levels after skills tests are taken (fitness).

Demonstrate an improved awareness of safety, proper use of equipment, and injury prevention.

Demonstrate knowledge of preventive health skills as well as cardiovascular training to prevent cardiovascular disease, strength training to prevent osteoporosis, and weight control to prevent diabetes (Type 2), and other related problems.

Design an individualized personal training program or related fitness assignment.
